This article details how to install your Engage DSX Linux player. It will review hardware, how to configure wireless and hardwired internet connections, and how to adjust the date, time, and screen orientation.
Hardware
In addition to your Linux player (small, square computer), there will also be a power cable in the box. The power cord will plug into the back of your player. Here, you will also find ports for Ethernet (hardwire Internet connection) and HDMI (display output/hub) cables.
On the front of your player, you'll find the Power button with an indicator light beneath it. Your player is configured to turn off when you press and release the Power button. This is safer for the system than holding down the button to force power off. Press and release the Power button to turn your player back on.
There are two USB ports on the front your player. These can be used to connect a keyboard and mouse (wired or Bluetooth). On the left-side of your player, you'll find a micro-SD slot (this is for optional use). On the right-side, there's a lock slot where you can secure the device with a lock cable.
Setting Up
When setting up your player, you'll want to connect an HDMI cable from a display. If you're using a hardwired connection, plug the Ethernet cable into your player as well.
Connect the power cord and wait for the player to boot. You'll see the desktop (pictured below) for a moment, then the Codigo/Engage DSX software will launch.
Note: This process may take up to three minutes.
Once the software launches, you'll see a screen displaying a four-character registration code. This code can be provided to the Spectrio Video Support team via email or phone to register your player.
Note: Once your code is provided, it'll take ten-to-fifteen minutes to download content.
Connecting to Wi-Fi/Internet Troubleshooting
If the player is unable to reach our servers, or isn't detecting an internet connection, you'll see a message that reads It looks like you forgot to plug me into the internet rather than the four-character code. This means you'll need to stop running Codigo/Engage DSX and enter the Settings menu.
To stop the player, connect a mouse and double right-click on the screen. This will bring
up the player controller, where you can select Stop Player which will take you to the desktop.
Note: This can take 30-to-60 seconds. During that time, the screen may go black.
- Once you're back on the desktop, click the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner, then click System Settings.
- Double-click Network. This'll open the network page. From here, you can look into your hardwired connection settings or connect to a wireless network.

- Click Options in the bottom-right corner to open the static input section.
- Using a connected keyboard, input the desired information.
Adjusting Time and Date
If your player is set to the incorrect time zone or date, you can adjust this from the desktop.
To do so:
- Exit to the desktop of your player as previously explained.
- Click the time in the top-right corner of the desktop.
- From the calendar, select the proper date.
- To adjust time, click Time and Date Settings from the drop-down and select the correct time zone.
Rotating Desktop Display
If using Codigo/Engage DSX in portrait mode rather than landscape, you can easily rotate your display.
To do so:
- Connect a mouse and exit to the desktop of your player as previously explained.
- From the desktop, double-click either Rotate Left or Rotate Right depending on which direction you'd like to rotate your display.
- The display will rotate and stay until manually changed (even if your player is rebooted).
Device Security
Spectrio Media Players are designed to be secure. The player will only initiate connection with preset Spectrio Media servers. All content is pulled only from the known servers by the player and is authenticated by the player before use. All non-essential daemons/services are disabled or removed, and packages are updated to address any security concerns.
Network Requirements
Firewall Rules
Spectrio media players operate only in a pull mode with our servers. This makes it very easy to configure networking at asite as well as reduces security concerns with the player. Players cache media on the device so that play can continue uninterrupted even when the Internet is not available. Large media can be scheduled for download during off-peak hours to minimize the bandwidth required for players.
Our media players allow only outbound connectivity and expose no services or ports by default. No unsanctioned external URLs or client calls are permitted, all content must originate from Spectrio servers. The following domains and ports are required to be open and whitelisted for operation.
Open access to the below IP ranges:
216.26.168.81 thru 90
216.26.136.244 thru 254
Bandwidth Requirements
- Heartbeat check-in every 5 minutes (50 bytes)
- Data update every hour
- New show applied (5-50Mb), depending on the number of files used in show
- Once new show has been applied, the hourly update thereafter is negligible unless you make additional changes.
- Statistical Update every 6 hours (750k)
Wi-Fi Requirements
The Spectrio Player PC must be able to connect to the internet and access the Spectrio website and server thru the firewall. The player supports 2.4/5.0 GHz Wi-Fi networks with open/WPA/WPA2 encryption. WEP encryption and networks with a Terms of Service page are not supported.
Cloud Security
Our cloud infrastructure utilizes world-class data centers with multiple layers of access control and environmental systems designed to ensure high availability. The data centers leveraged have ISO27001 certification and are Level 1 PCI DSS compliant.
