In the shipment box, your Spectrio Media Player (Windows) and its power cable will be included. The cable will plug into the back of the player, where you’ll also find ports for Ethernet (hardwire Internet connection) and HDMI (display output) cables.
On the front of your player, you’ll see the Power button with an indicator light beneath. The player is configured to turn on/off when you press and release the Power button. This is safer for the system than holding it down to force the power off.
The two USB ports on the front of your player can be used to connect a keyboard and/or mouse (wired or Bluetooth).
Setting Up
Note: Menus in Windows may differ from the screenshots below, but the icons will be the same.
Before activation, you’ll need to set up your Spectrio Windows player.
To do so:
- Connect the Spectrio Media player to a dedicated power source.
- Connect an HDMI cable to the player and the HDMI 1 port of the display.
- Any HDMI port will work; using HDMI 1 provides easy identification.
- If using a hardwire connection, connect the Ethernet cable to the player and router.
- This can be disregarded if using a wireless connection.
When the player is first powered on, you’ll see a screen similar to the one pictured below.
The player’s software is designed to automatically start once the device is powered on. To access the Windows desktop to adjust settings, you’ll first need to stop the software from starting.
To do so:
- When the player powers on, right-click on the mouse anywhere on the screen to bring up the Stop Player prompt.
- You’ll need to click quickly and repeatedly.
- Click Stop Player.
Following this, you’ll be able to work from the Windows desktop.
There are two ways to adjust screen resolution:
Using the mouse, right-click on the desktop and select Display Settings.
Or:
- Navigate to the Windows menu and click the gear icon to launch Settings.
Click System.
- This will launch the Display menu, where you can adjust Resolution and Orientation (Portrait or Landscape).
Note: EngageDSX software requires the video resolution to be set at 1920x1080 for Landscape and 1080x1920 for Portrait with 100% zoom.
To adjust system time and/or time zone:
- Navigate to the Windows menu and click the gear icon to launch Settings.
Click Time & Language.
- Toggle off Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically.
- After toggling these options off, you can set your local time zone.
- After setting your time zone, toggle on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically.
- Time should now display as the correct local time.
You can also adjust time manually by clicking Change under Change date and time. This will prompt a window where you can manually enter the date and time.
Connecting to the Internet
Notes:
- In the bottom right corner of the desktop, you’ll see a network icon (globe, computer, or dot with three curved lines).
- If you don’t see one of the network icons (or a similar one) shown in the following image, click the up arrow ^ to see if one appears.
- If you see this icon
, you’re currently connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable.
To connect to the Internet via Ethernet cable:

Launching the EngageDSX Software
To launch the EngageDSX software:

- If the network connection is successful, an activation code will be generated.
Note: If the player is unable to reach Spectrio servers, or the network connection is unsuccessful, you'll see the following error message: Uh-Oh! It looks like you forgot to plug me into the internet.
Device Security
Spectrio devices will only connect with Spectrio Media servers. Content is pulled only from servers known to the player that have been authenticated before use.
Non-essential daemons and services are disabled or removed. Packages can be updated to address any security concerns.
Network Requirements
- Players operate only in a pull mode with Spectrio servers.
- Media is cached on the device so that play can continue uninterrupted even when there isn’t a network connection.
- Large media can be scheduled for download during off-peak hours to minimize the bandwidth required for players.
- Players allow only outbound connectivity and expose no services or ports by default.
- No unsanctioned external URLs or client calls are permitted.
- All content must originate from Spectrio servers.
Bandwidth Requirements
- Heartbeat check-in every five minutes (50 bytes).
- Data updates every hour.
- New show applied (5-50Mb), depending on the number of files used in the show.
- Once the new show has been applied, the hourly update is minimal unless additional changes are made.
- Statistical Update every six hours (750k).
Wi-Fi Requirements
A Spectrio Player PC must be able to connect to the Internet and access the Spectrio website and server through the firewall.
Players support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks with open/WPA/WPA2 encryption.
WEP encryption and networks with a Terms of Service page aren’t supported.
